The imagery in this book is amazing. The only drawback is the NetGalley review copy has a digital watermark across the center of every page. Easy to ignore but distracting to read and detracts from the images. You can see  the images in the ‘free’ previews on Amazon

You would never know by the title that this was in introduction to digital photography book. Wildlife is just the icing on the cake that allows the authors to showcase their incredibly beautiful images.

The advertising for the book claims that you will learn:

  • How to integrate equipment with technique to capture superb wildlife images of birds, mammals, amphibians, and more with an emphasis on precision and speed
  • Where and how animals can be approached closely enough to photograph well
  • How not to disturb the critters around you, depending on environment (den vs. tree and everything in-between)
  • When (and when-not) to feed the animals
  • Technical info like cropping, frames per second for capture, pixels/enlarging, and even HDR
  • Where to focus on various types of wildlife
  • Lighting depending on which animals have high contrast
  • Ethics
  • Traveling with your gear
  • The “top 10” places in the world to shoot and how to find the best location for your interests

Yet the chapter titles tell a different story:

  • Chapter 1 – Cameras and Accessories: The Best Wildlife Camera Systems
  • Chapter 2 – Choosing and Using Lenses: Selecting Quality Lenses
  • Chapter 3 – Exposure Strategies
  • Chapter 4 – Precise Focusing Techniques
  • Chapter 5 – Shooting Quality Images
  • Chapter 6 – The Crucial Role of Light
  • Chapter 7 – Composition
  • Chapter 8 – Electronic Flash
  • Chapter 9 – Getting Close to Wildlife

Not that these topics probably aren’t covered in the above chapters but it is obvious from the chapter titles that this is an intro to DSLR photography and not an intermediate or advanced topic on wildlife photography. Luckily there is wildlife in everyone’s hometown environs, even if it on two legs, so everything in this book should be applicable to any novice DSLR photographer.

I am glad to be reviewing this book because I have a lot to learn!
